There There (Bojana Jankovic and Dana Olarescu) Tate Modern - 2017
Devised by There There Design by Naomi Kuyck-Cohen
t’s time to play the immigration game: steal jobs, indulge in health-tourism, scrounge on benefits and swarm your way to the British citizenship. Immerse yourself in the immigrant reality with the aid of EU and non-EU invaders and experience their exuberant UK lifestyle.
Trigger Warning is a collection of traditional village fête games, with a distinct foreign twist. Inspired in equal measure by the addictiveness of hook-a-duck and persistent xenophobia perturbing from headlines, the piece invites the audience to step directly into the shoes of a stereotypical immigrant. It's the perfect Brexit day-out activity.
The installation was further developed for Who Are We?, a week long Tate Exchange programme on borders and belonging, curated by Counterpoints Arts. At Tate Modern, Trigger Warning was, for the first time, invigilated by Eastern Europeans of different professional, economic and generational experiences, opening the public arena to an immigrant community that rarely gets seen or heard.
